Although widely circulated from the seventeenth century onwards, until recently these maps have been ignored by academic scholarship because they did not fit the theoretical frame which employed scientific accuracy as the main criterion for assessment. Conclusion The two themes which have structured this chapter are similar to the concept of itinerant and radial space or to the related one of smooth and striated space Leroi-Gourhan pp.
However, these concepts must be recognised as heuristic devices intended to map out a crosspollinating historical landscape. For example, the Treaty of Tordesillas is an imposition of authority but can also be seen as a form of conversation, and the map of Tenochtitlan is testimony to an admittedly flawed conversation between Spanish and Aztec polities.
In this sense, mapping involved speculation, not in the modern sense of the word but with the original Middle English meaning of exploration and observation. Cartographers and their audience were aware of the limits of their knowledge as well as those of cartographic representation. Therefore, the makers and users of maps employed them as tools for thinking, for negotiating their ideas about the world.
