Kate Gordon travels to a remote lagoon in Baja California, hoping to help her father discover a sunken Spanish galleon that disappeared centuries ago. In time, she learns that the ship may have carried something far more valuable than all the gold and silver aboard—a mysterious drinking horn out of Arthurian legend, which may have led to the demise of the wizard Merlin. As she explores alone in her sea kayak, Kate encounters several pieces of the puzzle: a terrible whirlpool, a group of ever-singing whales, a seemingly ageless fish, and a prophecy that, under certain conditions, the ancient ship may rise and sail again.
She plunges into an undersea world of bizarre creatures and terrifying foes.

But to save the life of her father, she must find some way to regain her own free will, and to succeed where even Merlin failed. This remarkable tale, companion to Heartlight and The Ancient One, weaves together mystery and fact, history and myth, science and faith, all in the course of a compelling adventure. The Ancient One. Not silly funny, but silly in that everything and I mean everything in this book is explained or solved by one of the characters. Whenever there is a problem, someone has the answer. And the answer always is obscure and comes from a strange piece of lore or magical wise knowledge.
Heartlight (Kate Gordon)
There is nothing for the reader to figure out, no mystery that last longer than a page or two. Also the characters emotions are completely ridiculous and badly expressed. Everyone is either deathly calm and handles unbelievably situations in a way that is impossible to believe, or they claim some emotion but never express it. In short, as a kid this was a great fantasy novel.
As an adult with more reading experience, it was a good idea badly expressed that really went too far in the fantasy department to have any credibility, which every fantasy book must have a little of to capture interest. Two stars. January 12, - Published on Amazon. I discovered this book some 20 years ago and loved it as a middle-schooler.
It was such a magical adventure, and as an Oregonian, it held a special kind of magic for me. I was delighted to see it rereleased in a kindle version! And as an adult, it's still as splendid as ever :.
